Presenters and Bios:

  • Natasha Helfer, LCMFT, CST-S can be reached at natashahelfer.com and runs a group practice, Symmetry Solutions, which specializes in the intersection of faith concerns, sexuality and mental health. She hosts the Mormon Mental Health and Mormon Sex Info Podcasts, and is the founder & current past president of the Mormon Mental Health Association. She has over 20 years of experience working primarily with people from religiously conservative backgrounds. She was recently excommunicated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for her advocacy work regarding sexual health practices within her community. 
  • Colette Dalton (she/her) is an LCSW who has worked in mental health for over a decade. As a queer woman who grew up Mormon, she has a special interest in working with people at the intersection of spirituality and sexuality and co-hosts the Called to Queer podcast. You can connect with her on Instagram @ColetteDalton or on Facebook @ColetteDaltonLCSW. 
  • Cindy Powell, LCSW, maintains a private mental health practice in Holladay. She's worked in the mental health field for more than 15 years in various capacities. Cindy is a former member of the Assembly of God church and has experience with several Christian faith denominations. Among various aspects of her work, Cindy supports an individual's exploration and self-determination of what is right for them and how they define it.
  • Ken Roach, LCMHC, is assistant professor in the Counseling Department at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. He maintains a small private practice in Holladay, where he specializes in working with sexuality and spirituality. Ken serves on the oversight committee ("leadership collective") of the LGBTQ+-Affirmative Therapist Guild of Utah, the DOPL CMHC licensing board, and also serves as co-chair of the American Mental Health Counseling Association Ethics Committee.
Course Objectives:
  • Participants will increase their knowledge about this diverse and complex population of clients.
  • Participants will further develop their skills in working with religion, faith, and spirituality.
  • Participants will explore the challenges in separating personal religious/spiritual values from those of their clients.
