UMHCA Continuing Education Approval

1. Utah Mental Health Counselors Association offers formal counselor continuing education approval for programs that meet specific criteria: 
    1. The event should be approved PRIOR to the date on which it is held.
    2. Application, supporting documentation, and online payment are submitted by clicking one of the events below (#2).
    3. The workshop must adhere to the AMHCA and ACA Code of Ethics
    4. After reviewing your application, decision letters are emailed within 2-3 weeks.
2. APPLICATION FEES

3. DETERMINING THE NUMBER OF CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS:

One CEU equals one clock hour of instruction. Breaks, lunches, social events and other non-training activities do not count toward CEUs.

4. HOME STUDY, TELE AND ONLINE CE REVIEW:

Home study and online courses must meet the same criteria as live workshops, but they must include a test that measures participant learning. Please submit a copy of the test with the application. UMHCA requires a minimum passing score of 70% on home study, tele and online exams in order to be eligible to receive CEUs. A CEU certificate or certificate of completion must be generated automatically or forwarded to the participant AFTER passing the exam.

5. RECORDING ATTENDANCE:

 It is the responsibility of the organization to verify attendance. Examples include: participant sign-in/sign-out sheets, use of electronic name badge readers, and the issuing of unique session codes to participants at the conclusion of programs. For home study, tele and online courses, the organization must retain participant test scores as evidence of particpation. PLEASE KEEP THESE RECORDS FOR SEVEN YEARS AND MAKE THEM AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPANTS UPON REQUEST. 

6. PROMOTING UMHCA APPROVAL STATUS:

Workshop or conference sponsors may advertise that the event offers continuing education credit only after approval. Events may be advertise as “UMHCA Approval Pending” if an application has been submitted in a timely manner, but has not yet been reviewed. The following statement may be added to event materials after obtaining approval: “This program is approved by the Utah Mental Health Counselor Association for ____ CEUs”. Use of the official UMHCA logo can be used in promotional material and on certificates after approval has been granted: 

Please note that UMHCA approved activities are recognized by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensure.

7. ADVERTISING UMHCA:

Website Listing of Approved CEUs UMHCA may make program information available (course name, date, and contact information) on our website at no charge. This is not automatic. If you wish your event to be posted, please make that request here within at least 2 weeks before your event.  In most cases, course information will be posted within 5-10 business days of approval. Most content is added to the website as it appears in the application. If you have questions, please email us.

The UMHCA Education and Conference committee makes approval decisions based on the information provided by workshop sponsors and cannot attend events to ensure that the information presented is as described in the application. If you attend an UMHCA-approved training and feel that the Code of Ethics or DOPL criteria were in some way violated, please contact the Education and Conference Committee to discuss the situation.
