The Utah Mental Health Counselors Association (UMHCA), as a state chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), is a professional organization working exclusively for Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC) engaged in the mental health counseling profession in the state of Utah. UMHCA’s mission is to enhance the profession of mental health counseling through licensing, advocacy, education, and professional development activities. The purposes of UMHCA are numerous, including but not limited to: promoting the profession of clinical mental health counseling, providing a system of exchange of professional information among mental health therapists, providing professional development programs for therapists to update competencies, and promoting parity in the state of Utah and to the Utah legislature. |
It is important to emphasize that UMHCA’s responsibility is to serve as a steward of the clinical mental health counseling profession in the state of Utah, which means that by extension UMHCA is concerned with the overall health and well-being of LCMHCs and the residents of the state of Utah. | Therefore, in times of social and political change that impact Utahns and the work of LCMHCs, it is important as a professional organization to clarify our values and how they inform the work we are engaged in to promote the clinical mental health counseling profession. First, it is important to define what clinical mental health counseling is, which is defined in the AMHCA Standards for the Practice of Clinical Mental Health Counseling (2023) as: “an interdisciplinary, multifaceted, holistic process of:

The definition of clinical mental health counseling as a profession illustrates what a mental health counselor does, but the values of a profession provide a better sense of the why, or how these core values guide the practice of mental health counseling. For example, codes of ethics, which focus on the ethical practice of counselors and are intended to guide the practice of counseling in order to ensure the safety of those served, are built upon core values and principles.
These values of the counseling profession, which are based on a fundamental spirit of caring and respect for others, inform six principles of ethical behavior:

These values and principles guide the profession of clinical mental health counseling and therefore inform the work that LCMHCs engage in. These values and principles drive UMHCA’s commitment to serve the field of mental health counseling, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC) in Utah, and residents of the state of Utah.
As a professional organization, UMHCA recognizes that a changing social and political climate can have an impact on the professional practice of mental health counseling, its practitioners, their clients, and society at large. UMHCA recognizes these impacts and seeks to provide stewardship that is responsive to social and political change, is supportive of its members, and is proactive in protecting and defending the field of mental health counseling, its practitioners, and those we serve. |
For those who wish to join us and become more active in advocating on behalf of the field of clinical mental health counseling in Utah,

UMHCA stands proudly with Utah’s clinical mental health counseling workforce and will not waver or falter in its responsibility to protect the work they do as well as those they serve. UMHCA is confident in those we represent and the work that they do. UMHCA will continue to work to support and promote the interests of clinical mental health counselors and those they serve in our state. |
