Lord of the Rings Therapy: Using Stories, Themes, and Metaphors Effectively with Clients

PRESENTER

Dr. Matt Buckley is a doctoral level licensed professional counselor (LPC) in

Mississippi, and a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) in Utah. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in community counseling and counselor education and supervision from Idaho State University. He has been a practicing counselor since 1993 in Idaho, Mississippi, and Utah, and specializes in marriage and family, child and adolescent, and group counseling. He holds national certifications as a Certified Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, and a Board Certified Telemental Health Counselor. He recently joined Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions as a professor of counseling. Dr. Buckley is also a board approved clinical supervisor in Mississippi where he acts as a clinical supervisor for other professional counselors and counselors-in-training who seek licensure; the diversity of his professional practice includes counseling, consultation, supervision and teaching.

 WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. More readily and realistically access their creativity in utilizing story, characters, and metaphor in their work with clients

2. Identify some key stories, metaphors and characters they can use in working with particular client populations

3. Be sensitive to the cultural and ethical aspects of engaging in these interventions
