Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Introduction to Mindful and Behavior Change Processes in the Service of Meaning June 6-7, 2024 Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based behavioral treatment that emphasizes acceptance of emotion and thought while focusing on positive behavior change that is meaningful and consistent with personal values. ACT uses verbal, experiential, and homework techniques, mindfulness, and other awareness practices to help clients connect with internal events (thoughts, feelings, sensations), reducing rigid attempts to control negative emotions and thoughts. New learning by the client is consistent with openness to experience and commitment to actions linked to personal meaning. The ultimate goal of ACT is to support clients by increasing psychological and behavioral flexibility.
