The workshop is aimed specifically at psychotherapists wanting to integrate self-compassion into their work.

Participants of this workshop will be taught over four days (in three hour sessions) online via Zoom

Dr Kristin Neff is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. During Kristin’s last year of graduate school she became interested in Buddhism, and has been practicing meditation in the Insight Meditation tradition ever since. In addition to her pioneering research into self-compassion, she has developed an 8-week program to teach self-compassion skills. The program, cocreated with her colleague Chris Germer, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, is called “Mindful Self-Compassion”. Her book,” Self-Compassion,” was published by William Morrow in April, 2011.

Christopher Germer, PhD is a clinical psychologist and lecturer on psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is a co-developer of the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program, which has been taught to over 100,000 people around the globe, author of The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion and co-author (with Kristin Neff) of Teaching the Mindful Self-Compassion Program and The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook.  

Marta Alonso is a licensed Clinical Psychologist specialized in mindfulness and compassion treatments. She is the director of Global-C, clinical center where she works with her patients and groups applying mindfulness and compassion based treatments since 2007. Member of the Executive Board of the Center For MSC. MSC Teacher Trainer and MFY Teacher Trainer and Mentor, completed the MSC teacher training itinerary in Massachusetts in its first edition, and being the first certified teacher in Spanish language.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Define the empirical construct of self-compassion, and identify misconceptions
  2. Describe how self-compassion relates to mindfulness
  3. Review the research supporting self-compassion for emotional wellbeing
  4. Practice self-compassion in daily life
  5. Handle difficult emotions with greater ease
  6. Describe key principles for integrating self-compassion into psychotherapy.
  7. Identify unique challenges and opportunities for trauma survivors in compassion-based treatment
  8. Enhance the therapeutic relationship through compassion and self-compassion practices during the clinical hour.
  9. Describe the neurobiology of empathic distress and apply self-compassion to alleviate empathy fatigue.
  10. Describe unique challenges and opportunities for trauma survivors in compassion-based treatment.
  11. Identify the emotion of shame in psychotherapy and apply a positive, compassionate-based approach to working with shame
  12. Teach clients self-compassion techniques for home practice that emerge seamlessly from therapy and can be practiced at home.
