About the Presenter:
Laura grew up in Colombia and Mexico and came to the United States for college where she earned a BA in Art and Spanish from Taylor University and Master of Science and Education Specialist degrees in Counseling and Counselor Education from Indiana University. Laura’s fifteen years of clinical experience has focused on addiction recovery, dual diagnosis treatment, group processes, depression, and anxiety. She has personal and professional interests in exploring culture, cultural understanding and the spaces in between. She fully recognizes this will be an area where she continues to learn and grow for the rest of her life. Laura is also a registered clinical supervisor and is passionate about ongoing learning, professional development and quality supervision. Laura’s relaxation time involves movies, finding the humor and joy in parenting teens and adventurous cooking and eating. She is a huge Bob Ross fan.

Description of Presentation:
Third Culture Kids (TCKs) have often learned the art of blending in and minimizing and missing their identities and needs. With higher reported levels of depression and suicidality than average. Clinicians and other providers with knowledge and education related to working with this population can improve rapport building, direct them to appropriate services and, if in a clinical role, help clients explore and understand their identities and the potential roles of loss and ambiguous grief in relation to recovery and healing.
Learning Objectives:
Based on the content of the workshop participants will be able to:
1. Identify five features to consider when seeking to understand and conceptualize patients with Third Culture Kid (TCK) identity components.
2. Describe Third Culture Kids in a clinical context: common protective factors and risk factors and the potential for traditional and ambiguous loss.
3. List two strategies providers can use to develop rapport and more effectively work with TCK patient populations within a trauma informed, culturally competent context.
