 Becoming an Inclusive Counselor 

A Virtual Professional Development Workshop 

Thursday, November 17, 2022 | 6:00 - 8:00 PM 

Course Objectives: 

At the end of this workshop, participants will: 

1. Think more critically about power dynamics and the role of counselors working with marginalized populations 

2. Gain greater awareness of systemic and internalized oppression 

3. Develop additional tools and resources in the practice of becoming an Inclusive Counselor 


Presenters: Colette Brooks, Ph.D., and Alicia Kelly, M.S. 

Colette Brooks, Ph.D., LPC, LSATP, NCC, ACS 

Dr. Colette (Lettie) Brooks is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Professional in the state of Virginia. She holds certifications as a National Certified Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, and Certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapist. Dr. Brooks graduated with her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of the Cumberlands. Her dissertation explored the experiences of students of color with culturally responsive teaching in CACREP accredited programs. 

Dr. Brooks has worked in both community mental health and private practice. She owned and operated a large multi-location practice for over five years before selling it in 2021. She has consulted with government agencies on mental health issues impacting the workforce. Her current private practice is dedicated to supporting emerging counselors through their clinical experiences and the licensure process 

Alicia Kelly, M.S. 

Alicia grew up as Filipina-American and low-income first-generation student. She has subsequently made social impact, representation, and intersectional advocacy a priority in her educational experience. Before Alicia’s position as Assistant Director of College Counseling and AP Coordinator at Waterford School in Sandy, Utah, Alicia advised first-generation high school students and returning adults with postsecondary endeavors and processes. Alicia holds two Master’s degrees, one in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University, and another in School Counseling from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She has spent her most recent years as a practicing school counselor. Alicia’s educational endeavors are driven by her love for social advocacy, fostering positive student relationships, social-emotional wellness, and supporting students.
