Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Foundational Training

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is a new approach to treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD. It is currently contraindicated for populations with certain medical conditions, as well as those with a psychiatric history of psychosis. When used in a clinical setting with trained medical and mental health professionals as part of an overall treatment plan, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy has very positive results for patients for whom conventional treatment has not been effective. The greatest risks are patients experiencing ketamine treatments with out adequate support of mental health professionals. Many clinics are providing ketamine treatments without mental health counseling. Also, the ketamine providers are often not trained to provide the degree of support during the ketamien sessions, nor do they provide adequate follow up to support patients with integrating their ketamine sessions into positive changes in daily life. Failure of medical providers to provide ongoing oversight of at home prescriptions can also lead to ketamine abuse and potentially reckless and dangerous behavior under the influence of ketamine. This training seeks to address these risks and provide an operationalized program for optimizing the use of ketamine treatments as part of an overall mental health treatment plan including preparation, facilitation and integration.

General objective of event

Provide therapists with a systematized program for assessment, psychological preparation, and strategies for facilitating ketamine sessions as an integrated intervention of an overall treatment program. Soul Surfing addresses integrating ketamine into clients’ mental health treatment, rather than using it as a stand alone treatment for depression, PTSD, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.

Soul Surfing emphasizes the necessity for therapists to be aware of their own biases regarding race, gender, SES, age, ability, culture, religion, and sexual orientation. It also emphasizes the importance of respecting and supporting clients’ exploration and expression of these dimensions of themselves and their experiences. We will use Brofenbrenner’s contextual model to teach these concepts. Soul Surfing is an integration of EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experience, breath work and mindfulness. The training consists of didactic training to teach content, modeling, role playing, and experiential breath work and low dose ketamine experiences guided by Dr. Lisa Gold.
